Are you an older adult who, because of choice or circumstance,
is without the support of adult children or close family members?

You are A SOLO AGER!

The SOLO AGERS Advocacy Initiative has been created by Ailene Gerhardt, Independent Board Certified Patient Advocate, to meet the support and planning needs of older adults just like you!

Becoming a member of the initiative provides the strategies, tips, tools, resources, and support for YOU to age well. Working with a passionate Independent Health Care Advocate and Certified Senior Advisor who has the expertise and skills to effectively communicate with medical providers and the members of your support team provides you with peace of mind.

As a SOLO AGERS Advocacy Initiative member, you’ll work one-on-one with Ailene to identify, organize, and document your healthcare needs and history, carefully assess who is currently in place to serve as a member of your support team, and learn how to navigate the opportunities and challenges of solo aging.

You Will No Longer Need to Wonder…

  • Who can serve as my local point person?

  • Who can help me organize my medical records, medications, advance directives?

  • Who will advocate for me should I have a medical crisis? How will I make sure my personal directives are honored?

  • How do I identify who should be a part of my support system?

Becoming a Member of the SOLO AGERS Advocacy Initiative will provide the answers to these questions and more!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • According to the US Census Bureau by 2034, there will be more people 65 years and older (77 million) than there will be under the age of 18 (76.5 million). One quarter of baby boomers (born 1946-1964) did not have children and about one third of Americans aged 45 - 62 are currently single.

In the past, when an aging senior needed assistance with healthcare and caregiving matters, their adult child(ren) or other younger family members were available to help out. As the statistics above point out, in the case of the current senior populations, there are fewer adult children to provide assistance. For those who did not have children, ensuring support as they age requires an extra layer of intentional and thoughtful planning to make sure supports are in place when needed.

Ailene Gerhardt, MA, BCPA, is passionate about this issue and sees the need for enhanced support for solo agers. The SOLO AGERS Advocacy Initiative is designed to meet the growing needs and demands of this unique and important demographic.
